Opening the creative mind through hypnosis

I am reviewing the courses I took during my doctoral tour, and I am taking you with me.  Don't worry, I won't make you read the 700 pg manuel on Character Strengths and Virtues by Martin Seligman and Christopher Peterson, but I do recommend it, especially if you are looking for tools to be happy.  it is the study of Positive Psychology, the backbone of my hypnotherapy practice.  I look for character strengths and virtues in my clients and not their weakness.  So the first lesson is Creativity.

It can be challenging and at the same time fun to walk through a strange country, not know the language and trying to read the menu to order a meal. You will know the value of  your creativity!

I watched my little 10 month old grand daughter who had mastered a few gestures in sign language and a few  animal sounds.  When she wanted me to feed her more, she would put her little fingers together signaling "more." When she wanted to see the dogs in the yard, she would signal "more" and then say whoo-whoo, when she wanted me to rub her head, she would point to her head and again signal "more!"  All that brilliant knowledge packed into a 10 month old brain, a way of figuring out things that are not directly taught.  We do it with languages, with our jobs, with our hobbies and actually in every aspect of life.  If you enjoy learning new things, have a curiosity about the world, or just like to do anything "your own way" instead of the usual way, you have strong creative tendencies.

What if you enjoy being creative, you like to draw, paint, write, dance, explore etc. but you just don't feel like it, or you feel stuck? What if you are "overly creative" day dream, love new inventions, but don't have the structure or the discipline to finish a project as in an ADHD mind of teens and adults? It can be a chemical inbalance connected with norepinephrine . Often amino acids such as the Neuro-Lift formula (see side panel) can elevate mood levels, they are clinically effective in the treatment of depression, and can help the creative portion of the mind calm down and focus on a new idea.    This is also where hypnosis can help with the creative process

I used this hypnosis script with a client who "was blocked" she was commissioned to paint a picture and the deadline was approaching, an anniversary present from a loving family to their parents.  It was to be presented at a large family reunion. The artist was beside herself, she felt as if she had never painted, she did not know how to make her painting flow, she had lost her creativity.

The script told her to relax and not worry about painting for just 20 minutes.  She could park her brushes on the side of the couch, and take them back and "worry" about her painting in just a few minutes, but for right now, why didn't she just go to a party and have a few appetizers and listen to some music.  She would look at all the happy people who were attending the garden party, watch them laugh, dance and enjoy eachother's company.  Everyone was so excited and they all had one thing in common, they were all related to the senior couple who entered the party, dressed in old fashioned wedding clothes; anxious to renew their wedding vowels under an arch of roses. I asked the young artist to give me a signal if she could see the love in their eyes, and feel the happiness at the garden party she signaled through an ideomotor response (raising a finger) that she could see them.  I asked her if she could see the colors of the garden, smell the roses, and feel the gentle afternoon breeze; again she signaled. Then suddenly something happened with the happy day, the entire scene froze and turned into shades of black, grey and white.  There would be no color, no sparkle in the eyes of the loving couple unless someone could paint the colors back.  Could she help? Was she willing and able to paint back the colors of the garden scene, and the glow of the couple about to be married, she signaled that she could..  This was called an indirect suggestion, it never directly mentioned her painting block, but gave her an illustration.  She was with the program, produced an award winning portrait for the celebration and knew that her creativity just needed a little nudge in the right direction.
Here is to your creativity
