Neurolinguistics and Hypnosis or How to fall in love with anything

Greetings from Doc Judie

Neurolinguistics has been around for a long time, it was used in hypnotherapy sessions by Milton Erickson, Jay Haley and Virginia Satir. It is the study of the way your mind perceives language. Chris Howard, motivational speaker and owner of the largest neurolinguistics company recently gave a talk about the inner dialog, what you say to yourself when you are doing something you like, and what you say when you are doing something you don't like.  I found his technique very interesting and I have modified it for my own use.  Here is my version, tell me what you think of it.

When we are really passionate about something, we say to ourselves or out loud, I love to ...........................fill in the blank, what ever it is.  It could be sports, painting, running, sewing, dancing-what ever turns you on and brings out your passion  So go into the words that you use when you are enjoying your favorite past time.  If you are like me, "feel it" get in touch with how you feel during your favorite activities.  I love to garden in the summer and bake in the fall. I love to get my hands into dough or dirt!  i love the creativity, the quick results, the smells, and the art form of the activities.  I literally lose time, I work long and hard in the garden; I bake large quantities of whatever I have created. The end result is I love to share with others.  In the garden, I  share flower seeds, crops, fresh fruit and pies with family and friends.

However, when I have to do mundane chores the passion is gone   For me it is paperwork, I "hate it!" Papers float around, I procrastinate, I don't get process forms on time and it is my least favorite mandatory task that must be done.  Needless to say, my office is a mess My garden and my kitchen are orderly, organized and cheerful  So it is not faulty neurology, it is a preference, one I "love" and one I "hate." The words describe my feelings toward the tasks, so in the exercise coming up, I reverse the internal message behind the words through a hypnotherapy session.  You can try it for yourself and see how it works for you.

I go through the steps of relaxation, and when my mind is calm I imagine all the wonderful feelings that  I have from pruning my fruit trees to planting my garden.  I see the end results in the fall of gathering up the harvest and converting the fruits and vegetables into wonderful dishes for my family and friends to share  It is more than just eating good food, I relive the whole process.  The end results are that I enjoy pleasing my family and friends, sharing dinners or picnics and all the good times that go with it. mmmmmmmmmm such a nice visualization.

Now I switch to my messy office, piles of paperwork, taxes overdue, forms for business to fill out...grrrrrrrrrrrr. So I usually procrastinate until I am forced to pay attention or pay the consequences.

Now for the change.  I have to look for something that makes sense about paperwork.  I do feel better when my office is straightened up and I can find things quickly  I feel empowered when my bills are paid on time and when I keep up on my correspondence. I now transfer the good feelings that I have for the garden and baking to office work. (o.k. it took me a few tries to get this down, just practice if it does not come to you right away)
I see the end results. When I keep in touch with people, it is satisfying, and increases my business.  When I take care of the bills immediately, I can budget when my checkbook is balanced.  I can stop saying I hate it to change my words to:  I really like the feeling I have when there is order in my office, my bills are paid, and I even have money in the budget for my garden! It pleases people when I stay in touch.  I know how much I appreciate it when people stay in touch with me.  I appreciate my clients response when they pay their bills on time.

The former task now has a different feel to it, I am careful to use positive words. I like the visually clean and orderly room where I am not wasting time, because everything is in its place. I almost "love it" not quite there yet, but I am getting close.

Here is to your mental and physical health

Self Hypnosis For The Birthday Wish

Self-Hypnosis For The Birthday Wish
Greetings from Doc Judie
Most people start their New Years resolution on the 1st of January, turning over a new leaf with the click of the calender clock announcing a new year. It is a little different, for me I set a goal list on my birthday.  From all the self help guru's that I listen to,  I have taken the best ideas from Quantum Physics, the works of John Assaraf, and Peggy McColt. They are pop culture self motivators and they definitely have their viewpoints; but I have my own custom version, and I hope you have yours. As I am in my sixties, I have lived more years than I have left, the remaining time has my attention.   I know that through quantum physics, the "universe" is neutral, it really does not care if I live or die, if I have a good life or not.  What the universe does provide is a type of energy that I can tap into and have a predictable outcome.  If I follow certain rules of logic and order in my life the chances are increased that I will have a healthier, more productive life. Assarat theorizes that the reason  people fail at the "motivation list"  is they don't stick to a, firm time table of 30 days. The time table cannot be broken for change to take place. Here is how it works: 1) Think of the changes that you want in your life. put a lot of effort and deep thinking into this as it is more than a wish list, you must see it as a positive change that will happen.
2) According to McColt, the list must be written and posted for view-mine is on the refrigerator and on my computer calender.  It is viewed at least three times a day. The change must be seen as a work in progress, that it is happening right now.  My version is that a working of action  has to be written on how the changes will take place, I have to be motivated and willing to do the steps for the change to happen. McColt claims not to care on how it will happen, but I think subconsciously, she does have a plan.
Most of us have gone this far, but here is the interesting twist that I actually do with my clients with addictions, but I have not applied it to myself:
3) The new action must be in play  for 30 days without a break.  There is no such thing as "a slip" on day 26 and oh well, I'll forgive myself and get back on track attitude.  If the change order is broken before the 30 days, you must start all over!!!

Self-Hypnosis script

I am going out on a limb here, but in the spirit of true committment, I will give you my self-hypnosis script for my 30 day change starting March lst and I will give you the final report in 30 days.  Make your own list and do it with me, I would love to hear how you are doing on your list. I use my script twice, once when I get up in the morning and once before bedtime..  It sets the tone,

I clear my mind with deep breathing.  The count is 3 inhale through the nose; hold for the count of 4,  and exhale slowly through the mouth for the count of 7.  This is repeated 10 times.

I see myself relaxing,  the energy from my breathing continues to move slowly through my body starting at the top of my head, working through the muscles in my face, down the front of my body and down my spine.  I feel warm gentle healing energy relaxing me, clearing me as it travels through my heart and my lungs.  The warm relaxed energy increases and travels down my legs into my feet  I am relaxed, open for my mind  to receive new information. ( I can do this very quickly because of years of practice, but take as much time as you need.)  In the evening, I often use soft music in the background, but not in the morning.)

I see myself changing in three areas, my health, my exercise routine, and my career.  i see a  change that  is right for me.  I see my blood pressure in a normal range and everything in my body working well.  I walk 3-5 miles a day, swim, or work out every day and I see 10 lbs that are so easy to lose shedding off my body. I no longer desire any white flour products, or anything with sugar in it.  My diet is composed of fresh vegetables, fruit, chicken or fish and 8 glasses of water. I will  pass a test  that will open new opportunities for me. My income will increase to  double what it was the month before, and my website will double in customers who viewed it (now you can definitely help me with this one, please tell a friend to view my site!)  I see everything on my list as happening. I am committing today and I will commit every day to keep my list in tack for 30 days, i have given my word and sacred pledge to bring my ideas to reality.
I now drift off to sleep and these new changes will work in my subconscious as I sleep.  or morning  I am awake, ready for the new day and all of the changes that are now in my life.

Here is to my Happy Birthday wish list and to yours whenever you want to start it.

Meditation and Hypnosis

Mediation and Hypnosis
Greetings from Doc Judie

I am often asked if there is a difference between meditation and hypnosis.  It can look the same, sitting or lying down in a quiet space, perhaps new age, or spiritual music in the background, observing a person  who seems to be "zoned out!"

Meditation:
The goal of meditation is to empty out your thoughts.  It is a time to quiet the mind and be still with the on going thoughts that run through your head all day.  This may be difficult for very anxious individuals, or people with busy minds (actually referred to in Buddhist Centers as "the monkey brain"). At first it is like saying "don't think of the elephant", and of course all you can think about is the elephant. It can get even worse -to be quiet and empty your mind for just 10 minutes starting out.  You will find yourself saying "I am not going to think of anything, I am going to be quiet, and relax and you may chant ommmmmmm or ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh to help quiet your mind.
About 2 minutes into the process, you will be wondering how long you have been "down" and you may even start counting,at least that was my first few experience and then there is always some weird itch that you can't scratch for 10 more bloody quiet minutes!. So why put yourself through this quieting of the mind? Science has proven that meditation helps lower blood pressure, release stress and give you an overall feeling of peace and well being. You have to tell yourself that all of your problems will be there in just a few minutes, but for right now, quiet down your mind and take a little 10 minute break.  It may be a relaxing experience for you, it may be a spiritual experience where you feel as if something or a higher power is filling you and you can hear differently when the chatter is not so loud.  It took me years to get to 10 minutes, rarely 20 minutes, yes, I am the original "monkey brain!" Experts can go for hours; find your level. It is a wonderful feeling when you get there.

Hypnosis
Is the natural state of mind we enter every day.  It is "over concentration" walking and forgetting time, getting mesmerized by the winding roads, fishing in an alpine stream,  making love; you are hyper concentrating on the activity, you are in the flow, in the moment. You have entered your subconscious theta state (quiet down mind waves)  You may not start out relaxing, but you can get there. .I always give people permission to be "wound up" and tell them to accept where ever they are.  They can listen to me or go on their own journey, it does not matter. I also introduce deep breathing as it is very difficult to exhale deep into your belly for 7 seconds and still be wound up. Excitement on one side and relaxation on the other, can't have both. As the breathing deepens, and the body parts are relaxed by suggestion (your head feels as if healing sunshine is streaming right through your face, making the muscles soft and relaxed.  Your mouth feels as if you have had a sip of delicious satisfying cool water.  The muscles in your shoulders and spine re-laxxxxxxxx and sink into the couch. etc.etc.Between my gifted voice (that can put anyone in a trance) soft music, aromatherapy candles and a few soothing pressure points on the eyebrows, most people start to let go. When the client is relaxed, or in a trance state, I give the suggestions for change in behavior.  This is where I suggest the right order and seeing the positive results that they desire.(clients might  want to change their eating patterns, get motivated, stop worrying, making more $$$ just to name a few of the common requests.). The thoughts now leave the judgemental conscious that does not believe change is possible and enters the subconscious where the emotions go into action and positive results start to take over the negative thoughts.  It can happen right away, after one session, or a layering affect after a few sessions.  It is just changing the energy of thoughts.  Think of  a negative thought as a block of ice.  When it enters the subconscious, the energy converts to liquid and flows.it is water, just in a different form. The client is concentrating on a positive outcomel they often  report feeling the change in energy as their thoughts change.

I often combine the two discipline of meditation and hypnosis.   Hypnotherapy does not have to be on-going direction.  A trained therapist will point the client into the positive state and ask him/her to see their positive outcome. (remember, all hypnosis is really self hypnosis).  For instance, I might suggest " see yourself at your perfect weight, how do you look? How do you feel? What is different? What are you willing to do to keep this beautiful new body? . Sometimes clients will touch their face or waist and even smile in trance.  I then tell them to be very quiet, don't question the transformaion, just enjoy it and"be with the change" for a couple of minutes. (they go into a quiet zone, get lost in the music, or where ever their subconscious takes them.  Sometimes they remember, sometimes not.

Sometimes people want "more of the quiet" after a hypnotherapy session, they are ready for deep quiet time and meditation is a perfect combination.  There is a tape offered through Hypnotherapy Training Institute in Marin County, California by Ormond McGill called "The Purple Flame" You can ask for it by emailing welcome@hypnotherapy.com
and follow the links to Ormond McGill.  He died in his late 90's and I had the awesome privilege of being one of his last students.  It is a beautiful meditative/hypnosis tape of acceptance of who you are.  I have listened to it probably  50 times, and have "never heard the end." I just wake up when it is over, but I don't know where I am or what Ormond said.  Yes, that's how I managed to get in my 10-20 minutes of meditation. You can also use chanting CD's or your own peacefully quiet music.

Here's to finding your quiet peaceful place.
