I have so many clients in my practice that have forgotten how to laugh! They spend their day in a anxious state without relief at night, they toss and turn and ruminate about all that is wrong with the life. Now I know that we live in tough economic times, with death, divorces, and national disasters. There does not seem to be much to laugh about, but that is exactly what is needed to change your thought process.
There are a few countries that know how to enjoy life, they laugh even when things are not going well and enjoy what they have. They often live on less than we do in the United States. tThey have close bonds with their family and friends, they are grateful for the simple things in life such as a sunny day and a full belly. A report published yearly rates countries on a happiness scale.
"Costa Ricans report the highest life satisfaction in the world and have the second-highest average life expectancy of the new world (second to Canada)," the organization said in a statement.
This year's survey, which looked at 143 countries, featured Latin American nations in nine of the Top 10 spots. The runner up was Dominican Republic (which just suffered from earthquake damage) followed by Jamaica, Guatemala and Viet Nam. Where did the United States place in this survey? A sorry 114th place because of its heavy consumption in liquor, drugs and food, lack of satisfaction and laughter!
Yikes! If these other countries have learned to turn to laughter in spite of their problems, we can do the same so go back to basics. Find a funny little furry pet to make you laugh, or if you are blessed with children or grandchildren, it will be impossible to have a bad day! Just look at those funny little faces and your problems will fade away.
You can use self hypnosis to get into a state of relief. Breathe deeply and go back to the playful child like part of your mind. Remember a funny situation where you could not stop laughing and remember how you felt. Were you with friends, playing with a pet or experiencing a funny situation in the work place or in a group of people? Remember how good it felt to just laugh out loud.
It has been proven that laughter builds up the immune system, releases endorphins, relaxes the body and helps you sleep "and even helps you lose belly fat! So find your funny bone, "don't worry, be happy" it will save your life.
