The Debt Ceiling and The Collective Consciousness

Judie Brierly - Monday, August 01, 2011
Greeting from Doc Judie
" Washington strikes deal on debt ceiling"....reads all the headlines, but it is still conditioned about the approval from the House and the Senate tomorrow.  This blog is not about which side I am pulling for, I am actually pulling for the art of compromise, much the same way I work with couples on marriage resolution issues. If you really listen to both sides, there is merit in all sides, so how does it come together? I am making a prediction,,,IT WILL HAPPEN!

Perhaps there is a bigger picture that surpasses the ego of the parties.  Imagine just for a minute, that they are not manic, driven politicians, but actually decent people (for the most part) who passionately believe in doing what is best for the country.  Perhaps they really do go home at night and worry, pray and toss and turn all night not wanting the country to go into financial default  It seems impossible when I listen to the media that just fills me with fear and doubt.  So maybe these men and women go home and ask their higher powers to help them figure out the mess, to find common ground, and maybe they are able to sleep with the hope that tomorrow will bring a solution.  That is called the collective consciousness.

The collective consciousness is having a collective thought that many share for a common goal in society. It is found in prayer circles where people get together and pray for peace. It is connecting through the mind much like the 'mind melt" of the Star Trek series It is wanting something so bad that a group of people focus on the solution and do not let the road blocks get in the way.
So if I was setting up group hypnotherapy sessions for the congressmen and women, I would have them get very still for just a few minutes (it better be a short session, can you imagine holding this group any longer than 20 minutes!) During the session, they are on a break from the problems at hand.  They are on a state of the art jet that can take them anywhere that they want to go, and the problems are not welcome.  To start the jet, they point toward the direction they want to go and breathe deeply. Taking in healing restful oxygen that will relax and refresh their brain and tired body  After ten deep breathes they are off.  Immediately their bodies relax and their minds clear guiding the jet to the journey of their dreams.  They are flying out of the Sunday night sky into the Monday sunrise, it is spectacular. Bright, big, and a promise that things will get better.  They suddenly look to see a co-pilot sitting in the cockpit next to them, it is a member of the opposite party!!!
It is a nightmare and suddenly they can't agree on anything, which direction to fly in, the altitude or how to land. The vacation seems to be ruined.  Suddenly from the radio comes a booming voice and it says: " You only have one hour of fuel left" the controls will jam if there is not a bi-partisan  agreement on how you will land, your destination, and it must be done in the time allotted  That is all....the voice leaves and the only choice is to use their collective consciousness, their mutual will to survive, believing that it is more important to agree than disagree because the consequences are the end of their life as they know it.  So the plane lands....that is how it will happen tomorrow, or Tuesday I will have a big blank blog with the word Oops! and a picture of plane crash!   Try this exercise in your own unresolved issues-decide to compromise or crash!

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Finding Sunshine even in the snow

Greetings from Doc Judie

About this time every year I write about Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), where some people are affected by lack of sunshine and suffer from "the winter blues." So in this blog, I am going to concentrate on how to 'imagine you are in the sunshine" through hypnosis!

I recently saw an article about Costa Rica, known as one of the happiest places on the earth, and as I read, I realized that Costa Rica was not only a lush country, filled with sunshine, the ocean, and lush green foliage, but the people generally had "a sunnier attitude."  When asked "How are you today" I often respond seasonally "Just trying to stay warm, or loving the sunshine." A Costa Rician responds "Pura Vida" which means "pure life", or going great or no worries!  What a great response and reminder that life is an attitude, not a weather condition.

I live in Nevada and it is 9 degrees as I write this.  My garden is gone, my trees are bare and there are no flowers to greet me in the morning or ripe berries to pick off the bushes; however, nothing is stopping me from bringing in a few plants from the outside.  The lavender, begonias, and small roses are in heaven and starting to bloom for one more round.  I planted hyacinth, narcissus and tulips for the early spring, and it makes me happy to have something blooming by my kitchen window.

I love my water aerobics in the winter.  There is something about being with a group of people that just want to move their bodies in warm water, laugh like crazy and enjoy the outdoors if it is snowing or a little winter sunshine  steams down on usbetween the rain and snow clouds.  I hit the gym when I can't walk and moving my body raises the endorphin levels and chases the winter blues away more than 'baking cookies or drinking hot chocolate!"

So what else do those Costa Ricans have going for them? They live longer, they are not as concerned with material goods and not everything has to be brand new;  they recycle.  Their energy comes from wind and solar power, they are engaged in echo-friendly activities and have a positive outlook. So I am doing little things, using paper bags for my trash liners, drinking out of a metal bottle, not plastic, and using recycle bins at the dump sites in town.

The Costa Ricians also take the time for visiting with friends and working on their "plan de vida" or "life plan." They find a reason to get up in the morning and see where they are needed, either taking care of a parent or a child or helping in the community.

So during these long winter months, use the time to do a little hypno-meditation while the earth is quiet and you can reflect on all that is good in your life, what is it that you need, and how can "you get out of yourself" and make someone else's life a little better. See yourself in your favorite climate and concentrate on "the feeling" of the beach or the forest or the mountains. Bring it to you, it lives in your mind year around.  Now think of something that has a purpose, something that fills you will passion. Just thinking about this new  goal will protect you from winter depression and even lengthen your life (Costa Ricans boast of more centurions than most countries in the world!). It does not have to be saving the rain forest, it could be as simple as taking your old books and magazines to a rest home or library, donating canned goods to a food closet, or calling an old friend. You may find that more serious goals also come to you during the winter months. Perhaps you are going to start on your book, take classes, learn a new craft, or paint or clean out a room. As you meditate, think about what living pura vida means to you. Is it spending time with your family or helping out for a cause you care about? Devote a few minutes every morning to that thought.  You will then turn your thoughts into an action plan where you feel more valued and connected. Researchers who study happiness state "you will get a helper's high which will boost your mood for days!" So this winter, chase away the winter blues by taking care of yourself, going outside (regardless of the weather) exercising and turning your thoughts toward doing something for someone else. (Now about baking those cookies and sipping hot chocolate...o.k. compromise and enjoy it with a friend!)  These tips could chase away your SAD condition, make it a bearable winter, or even the best winter you have ever had!
Here's to your mental and physical wiliness.  Let me know how you beat your winter blues.

Tap into your strength through hypnosis

Judie Brierly - Saturday, October 02, 2010
Tapping into your strength through hypnosis

Greetings from Doc Judie

I can remember my early training, using the methods drummed into my head, mainly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT.  It is what most therapists use because it gets to the point. It looks at "what is wrong" and the therapy guilds you to change your thinking and do something different. It is very useful for changing habits, but it has its drawbacks.  Like most popular theories, CBT points out "what is wrong" and does not concentrate on "what is right" with the person.

I use a positive approach, asking a client "what is good in your life? How do your strengths get you through difficult times? What is still good in spite of your problems.  Most people can cite the reasons that they still find joy in life, a few have to be taught from the ground up before they give up and perish.

When you come right down to the basics, humans are programmed right down to their DNA to want to live and to have a good life. The problems will always be there, and regardless of the degree of suffering and pain, you will return to a set point of happiness that you had before the tragedy.

A sixty year old man was recently found wandering around a desert in Southern California without food or water for 5 days.  He wrote notes to his wife and remembered his love for her, and that is what kept him alive until help arrived, that connection to his wife kept him alive.

A mother of a 14 year old son who recently committed suicide. She has to remember that she has other children, and it is not her time to leave the earth.  She struggles with the recent tragedy, but pushes herself to take care of her grandchildren, and their innocent laughter helps to heal her heart  get through the day. It is a reminder that she has purpose, internal strength, to be here.

A young man was recently caught "doctor shopping' for pain medication which turned into an addiction. It all started anno
cently by a doctor too eager to reach for his prescription pad to solve a problem.  My young client is in a recovery program and is counseling younger peers with addiction problems. He has moved on, using the experience in a positive way to help others.

Pain is pain, suffering is part of life,  and no one has the perfect life so accept  the human condition. You are meant to suffer and feel pain for awhile ,not block every thing that comes to you with a pill.   When you lose someone, you will be devastated, but within a two month period (most of the time, may take a little longer) eventually you will start to return to your set point of being yourself, and yes, you will be able to find joy in your life "in spite of the pain."

So accept it, "shit happens" but "happiness happens" too!  I listen to my clients as it is important to let them tell their story.  it is important to  but it equally important not to stay in the grief session after session.  Many of my clients have not found relief through traditional therapy, they state that they have spent years learning everything about their depression, they have taken pills, and they understand their condition thoroughly....but they are still depressed!

HYPNOSIS:   I know you were waiting for me to finally get to the turn around point.  Through relaxation, breathing techniques, I help people "get back into their bodies" they often report feeling like they are floating and not in touch. The script recognizes the sad event, but does not leave the client there or direct them "not to think about their problems." Those ridiculous suggestions just don't work.  Instead, I allow the client to follow their own path, they know what they need to do far better than I ever will. Perhaps they need to mourn a little longer, they is no magical time limit.  Perhaps, they just don't feel like getting up and finding another job, they have to find themselves first. Perhaps they need to look at the picture of their lost child and not move the clothes out-let it be! (for a reasonable amount of time-the client will usually tell me "I would like to find a job within the year, or I can't feel like this for another year").

The second part of the script is to remind clients that they have strength to get through this even if they don't think that they do.  They can go back to other situations in their life and remember how they got through those periods. Through hypnosis they remember how to tap into their survivor instincts, which are much stronger than their weaknesses.
The problems will "always be there" or new ones will crop up, but how they deal with it and how they learn to build up their energy is what they find through the hypnotherapy sessions.

What helps? I often take the clues from the clients. Do they want to be with family and friends, or do they prefer to be alone? Would they like to try journaling or would they rather turn to a daily walk? Isolation is good for awhile, but humans are social creatures, and that connection is healing and necessary.

There are a few of my clients that are so down that they do need help from a mental health professional or a medical doctor, at least for awhile, but most people will come out of their grief and  they want to  find their way back to a life worth living, they are just stuck for awhile.

So whatever you are going through, know that you will get through it with your strengths, even if you don't know what they are right now.  Lean on others when it gets too tough, or get out of your self for a little while and go help someone else. The problems, the hurt, the loss will never leave you; but you are a survivor, you have made it this far and you have the genetic code to get through the sad times and yes, even feel joy and happiness again.
Hypnosis can help with the process, find a licensed ASCH professional in your area or give me a call.

Amino Acid Therapy and Hypnosis

Greetings from Doc Judie

I hope you missed my blogs as much as I missed writing them for you.  I have been gone from my site for over a month and I have a lot of new information to share with you.  I am working with a new company, Montiff, owned by Don Tyson, the world's leading expert on amino acid formulation.

For those of you who would like more in depth information on  amino acid therapy, go to montiff.com and click on the tech sheets to see how the aminos work with different parts of the body. You may want to look at a copy of The Amino Revolution by Robert Erdmann...or you can put up with my short version of amino acids and how I use them with hypnosis.

The amino acids are food suppliments, they are proteins,  the building blocks of life. When people are sick, stressed, suffering from injury, panic attacks, anxiety or depression symptoms,  there is a physical reaction in the body. The metabolic pathways are disturbed, and nutrients cannot be deliered to the cells; when the brain is traumatized, the body suffers, when the body is traumatized, the brain suffers.  They cannot be seperated.

Amino acids are not drugs  They won't suppress the symptoms of your illness while avoiding the causes  These remarkable powders work solely by strengthening the natural metabolic reactions in your body that help you regain your natural balance.

I love hypnosis, it is my favorite tool that I use to help people hear a therapeutic message, but there are times when they simply cannot relax, they cannot breathe, and their body has forgotten how to produce any endorphins. They are physically out of balance.  So for extreme cases of trauma, PTSD, and anxiety, amino acid formulas help with the hypnotherapy session. Can't hypnosis on its own merit restore balance in the body? In many cases it does, but it may take several sessions. When someone is in stress why not give the hypnosis which works on the mind, a little help by mending the body naturally.

The amino acid D-Phenylalanine:   It can help with chronic pain, help the body fight cravings for drugs, or sugar when endorphins are not being manufuctured. D-Phenylalanine aids in the effects of acupuncture treatments by offering more pain relief tha if the needles are used without it.  It can also increase the pain threshold for prolonged periods during dental surgery.

It has been very effective when treating clients with chronic physial and mental pain during a hypnotherapy session.

Montiff has a wonderful formula of L-tyrosine, N-Acetyl-Tyrosine which helps boost low levels of catecholamines (feel good chemicals) associated with depression, anxiety, irritability. It is useful for drug and alcohol cravings. So why not ask for a little help from a natural source, I am about helping people on their path to wellness, through hypnosis, talk therapy and amino acid therapy.

Send me an email if you would like more information on amino acid therapy.

I can't find my keys! Finding things through hypnosis

Greetings from Doc Judie

I just did this exercise with a friend of mine and I thought i would share it with you.  How often do you rush to the car only to find that your keys are nowhere to be found! Very frustrating.  Of course you pull out the spare, but the "main set" has your favorite silver good luck charm on and everything else that is important to you; your mail box key, your gym locker key, your house key-ouch!

The first thing you do is to calm down. Do this when you have 20 minutes to spare.  If you are suddenly losing things, more than likely you are in a stressful state, multi-tasking, and chasing a hectic schedule.  So sit back or lie down.  For just a few minutes, clear your mind and take a mini-mental vacation from life.  Do 10 rounds of deep breathing, in through your nose and exhale deeply through your mouth.  Imagine that you are emptying out a balloon when you exhale, really go deep into your belly.  Now think of anything that is bothering you and see where it lands on your brain or body. Where do you feel tightness or pain? Blow some nice relaxing energy into those affected parts and imagine the soreness or distressed points breaking up and you will feel relief.

Now just enjoy where you are, take yourself to someplace pleasant, without any stress, without a schedule, without a thousand things to take care of....can you see it? A mountain cabin? A seaside cottage?  Wherever it is, enjoy the adventure....by this time you just start to really unwind, your logical mind will pop back in and remind you that "you can't get to the vacation cabin without the car keys!" Time to address the obvious.  Think back to the last time you had the keys in your hand.  Feel the shapes of the keys, and hear the sound that they make when they hit the desk, your purse, your pocket. Do not use your conscious mind to "figure it out" it will only give you logical information, and your keys may not be in a logical place.  Ask your fingers instead to connect to your subconscious.  If you remember having the keys in your hand in the morning, raise your index finger.  If you don't remember, raise your thumb.  Take yourself through all the places that you remember and your fingers will float to the surface without you thinking it through. Ask your fingers for location; did I have them in the car? in the house? in the gym?  You will notice a hesitation when your subconscious gives your fingers a clue, don't try to figure it out, just keep asking.  When you have exhausted your questions or when you naturally feel it's time to end your journey, slowly get up and put the key finding adventure aside.  If you truly misplaced your keys, your subconscious will continue to work on the outcome.  If they fell out of your pocket, or if someone picked them up, obviously there will not be a response except the last time your subconscious remembers the keys in your position.

The results will suprise you.  Remember the subconscious does not necessarily go direct, it rambles around concentrating more on the feelings of the keys, when you use them, how they feel and what they mean to you.

The answer may jump up at you immediately such as "I was reading the paper and they were on the kitchen table..."
You may find them under the newspaper!  Maybe nothing will happen until later that eve. or the next day-go where your subconscious directs you even if it does not make sense to your logical mind.

My friend tore her house up, contacted stores and the gym, but after the exercise, she found them outside,  left on a fence post while she dumped the garbage!

Give it a try, trust your sub conscious and see what pops up!

Now my turn,  time to take my own advice: " I can't find my office keys!"   Breathe! Let go and they will appear!!!

I garden, therefore I am

Judie Brierly - Tuesday, June 01, 2010

I garden, therefore I am

Greetings from Doc Judie
Maybe I can get those ducks to come to my water garden!
Memorial Day weekend is the start of the garden season in my hometown of Genoa, Nevada. I am located at the base of the Sierra Foothills, where the old timers warn never to plant until after Memorial Day!

It is then a race to the most beautiful garden center, the Greenhouse Nursery. The nursery is located in Carson City, where the following friendly advise is given." Plant corn, potatoes, asparagus & summer bulbs early this month. Plant around the 1st of June if you have the correct microclimate or are just adventurous. The last frost for many years has been Memorial Day weekend, so be prepared to cover the garden with cloth for greater protection. Plastic does almost nothing."

I am a believer, the Greenhouse Nursery has replaced the Dali Lami, Bible Study, and any and all social gatherings for awhile.  I am on a mission, I have purpose, I have dirt and I have seeds!  Anyone who knows me will know where to find me in the month of June-in the garden.

Now I know I am sounding over the top with enthusiasm, but there is sound reasoning behind what I do.  The benefits of gardening have physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. I drop 10 pounds and  two sizes every summer!  In the winter, I turn into such a wimp, I huff and puff when I have to carry more than two grocery bags into the house from the car. However, something snaps when I am gardening, I only see the task at hand and do whatever it takes.  I can dig in the dirt all day, sling 50 pounds of fertilizer over my shoulder and stretch out a bale of fence wire.

Now if you are not a believer in hypnosis, try gardening to put you into an altered state! I lose time, I get lost in the beautifl forms of the flowers and plants I am in aromatherapy heaven when planting basil, cilantro and lavender.  The scents mix with the overgrown lilac bushes and I feel intoxicated!

In the garden, it is not safe for cell phones.  I don't need music.  I don't want chatter.  I enjoy the wind chimes which softly hit notes in the breeze.  I love to feel rich fertile soil and break it up with my fingers.  I feel energized with the warm sun on my back and I tingle when the cold irrigation water from the ditch rushes over my garden clogs.  It is almost sensual. (O.K. not quite there are some things that potatoes and rutabagas just can't do!).

In the garden, my problems do not make it past the weathered garden gate. The bills, the appointments, the phone calls are on the other side.  I will get to them in a little while. When I am in the garden, I am finding my balance, adjusting my attitude and resetting my biostat.

I often state that I am not a "healer," but a facilitator to help people when they are stuck or feeling sad or overwhelmed.   Nature on the other hand is a true healer.  Try gardening, hiking, or sailing on a lake.Go outside where humans really belong. Try your hand in the garden.  Discover flowers, home grown vegetables, and fruit bearing trees.  Breathe fresh air and like my little seeds, you too will start to bloom.

Here's to your mental and physical health.

New Food Supplements

Greetings from Doc Judie

In my practice, I use a holistic approach to presenting problems.  I listen to the client, deliver the message of change through hypnosis, and often suggest body cleansers and amino acid therapy for total balance of the body and the mind. If I suspect an underlying physical condition causing mental distress, my clients are referred to medical experts and in a team effort, I can best serve my clients with their medical and psychological concerns.

By using natural supplements,  I have witnessed amazing changes in a short period of time.  One of my clients who had a 20 year gambling and drinking habit was finally able to stop his destructive habits.  He attributes his turn around to the hypnotherapy along with the amino acid therapy used for impulse control .

Another client flew in from another state.  He had been through several clinics for his alcohol dependency. The Pure Body Institute liver cleaner took the bloat out of his belly within three days, and Craig Nutraceuticals, Amino Balance and NeuroLift  (amino compounds) keep the cravings away

Several women in my weight loss class report losing 20-100 lbs on a special whey protein drink and L-Glutamine.The group members support eachother through exercise and supplements.

Finally, many of my clients who suffer from thyroid conditions do well with special testing to make sure all three tests on the thyroid panel are completed.  Holistic doctors or DO's understand this.  A supplement which helps with the aging process and delivers the thyroid medicine to the body is 7-Keto DHEA.  If you are interested in DHEA  It burns fat, increases the immune system and enhances the memory.   Make sure to only take 7-Keto as it does not have estrogen connected to it.  (if you are interested, look on the side panel, I have been threatening to update this for months, I finally am getting around to it) hmmmm, just read that statement back, I need more 7-Keto DHEA for my memory!

Here are some new aminos that I am giving to my clients and using them feed back; so far the results are positive.   You will be happy to know that I try them out first.

L-theanine (trade name Suntheanine) Controls stress
This compound is made out of green tea, L-theanine exhibits many positive, physiological effects.  The amino theanine promotes Alpha waves in the brain; an awake, alert and relaxed physical and mental condition without drowsiness.   It is great for relaxation, a feeling of well-being and calms down stress levels.

Resveratrol
Resveratrol is an antioxidant found  in red grape skins.  It has anti aging benefits, helps clean out the arteries of your heart, and burns fat.  I am not sure about this one.  I have been trying it for one month and I have lost 5 lbs.  I seem to have a little more energy, but I usually do when the weather warms up and I can walk, swim, and work in my garden.  My clients report good things about it, so if you have comments please share them with me.

So instead of drinking a gallon of tea or a bottle of wine, get the good nutrients  by taking  L-theanine and Resveratrol.  Remember aminos are supplements, they are not meant to replace good nutrition, exercise or prescribed medications.  Instead, they are "supplements" which can enhance your well being..

Spiritual Mandala and Hypnosis

Spiritual Mandala and Hypnosis

Greetings from Doc Judie

I recently attended a spiritual workshop on the shores of South Lake Tahoe California.  It was a  late spring storm, yet the presentingTibetian monk was almost bare chested wearing only his light cotton orange robe.  He seemed impervious to the cold and was in a deep trance state as he created a beautiful mandala.

The word mandala is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit.  Loosely translated to mean circle.  A mandala is far more than a simple shape.  It represent wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the organizational structure of life itself-a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite.  The world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds.

Describing both material and non-material realities, the mandala appears in all aspects of life the celestial circles we call earth, sun, and moon, as well as conceptual circles of friends, family and community.

In ancient Tibet, as part of a spiritual practice, monks create intricate mandalas with colored sand made of crushed semiprecious stones.  The tradition continues to this day as the monks travel to different cultures around the world to create sand mandalas and educate people about the culture of Tibet.

The creation of a sand mandala requires many hours and days to complete.  Each mandala contains many symbols that must be perfectly reproduced each time the mandala  is created.  When finished the monks gather in a colorful ceremony chanting in deep tones as they sweep their mandala into a jar and empty in to a nearby body of water as a blessing  This action also symbolizes the cycle of life.

As I participated in the days of watching the detailed art form, I noticed that the group (myself included) lost time in a form of group hypnosis.  On an individual level as matras were hummed and the intensive art work continued, I did not want the project to be over.  But on the last day, the madala was completed, it was then destroyed and dumped into the chilly lake.

Very much like life, we are grains of colored sand and have a driven desire to create something with our time.  We build homes, have families, acquire knowledge, build wealth.  There is a time to stop and let it all go, completing the cycle of life and passing it on the next generation to start all over again. .  I would love to hear your comments on the mandala.

Let Nature Heal Your Heart

Let Nature Heal Your Heart

Greetings from Doc Judie

Spring is final here, what a wonderful time to celebrate Earth Day coming up.
It is a day that I give thanks for the beauty of the earth and the simple pleasure of breathing clean crisp spring air.  If you have read enough of my blogs, you will know that I love to garden.  I find it almost impossible to be anxious or depressed when I am pruning trees, raking the winter leaves off the lawn, or planting new seedlings.  There is a study that connects a sense of well being with the microbes in the soil.  So hands and feet touching the earth is good physical exercise and calms you down mentally-a double blessing.

Here is my spring ritual, one that I actually repeat often throughout the year, regardless of the season.  When you have been cooped up in the house (we spend over 85% of our lives indoors) it is time to go outside.  Watch little kids or house pets; they just can't stand it any longer and hang around the front door waiting for you to let them out!  You probably feel that way too.

I have the luxury of living in the Sierras  There is beauty all round me from alpine lakes to mountain ranges to green meadows and thick forests.  I don't have to go far to find beauty, it is as close as my backyard.  I hope you have a setting close to nature, but if not, take a short ride to a park, a lake, or even a thicket of trees and breathe in some clean air that is not filled with pollution. Do this especially if you feel anxious, depressed or if you have a heavy heart for some reason.

Empty your mind and come up with your own self hypnosis script of feeling invigorated as you stand or sit still for just a minute. When you are ready start to breathe.   Take your first breath slow and easy, inhale through your nose for a count of four; and release through your mouth for a count of eight.  Exhale deeply into your belly and really empty yourself out.  Do this ten times and visualize all of that clean crisp spring air going through your heart.  Feel a sense of gratitude for what is good in your life and as you do, you will feel the heaviness in your heart lift.

That is the gift of life from planet Earth, fresh air to breathe.  Feel it on the outside of your body and circulating all the way through your brain and body.  Nature will heal your heart.
Here's to your physical and mental health. Happy Earth Day

Endorphin Rush and Hypnosis

Greetings from Doc Judie

Spring is finally here, and it is nature's way of saying "Lets Party!"  Daffodils and Tulips are pushing up through the thick mat of winter leaves, blue birds are chasing each other around my yard, and runners are passing by the front of my house with a glazed smile and wave as they fly by. I get right into the spirit when I pick up a rake or turn the earth over.  I always get carried away, and work too long and too hard the first day out, but "I just can't stop myself!" I guess I am experiencing an endorphin rush.  The term has been adopted to popular speech to refer to the feelings of exhilaration brought on by pain, danger, or other forms of stress supposedly due to the influence of endorphins.  My runners who just passed by my house call this condition a runners high.

Why does it feel so good to push through the pain of heavy exercise, sore backs, nicked fingers, and gasping for breathe while lifting weights?  Studies found that runner's high, or endorphin rush might be caused by the release of epinephrine, serotonin, dopamine and more "feel good chemicals."

It has also been reported that acupuncture can tap into trigger points and release endorphins, mothers who give birth or breast feed their babies report the same sensation, and of course, through deep relaxation in a hypnotic trance, pain relief can be experienced as endorphins are released in this extreme form of relaxation.

I do not understand the entire chemical response of the body, but it seems that we are build with a motivation center that encourages us to keep on moving even when it hurts because it will feel good in the long run.  Without that wonderful endorphin rush, I would give up on the garden with the first ache and back pain, my runners would have quit after a painful half an hour, and how would I ever get anyone to relax and forget about their pain in my hypnotherapy clinic!

So do what you love, push through the pain and enjoy that wonderful endorphin rush that will take over and take you to the end with a smile on your face.

Here's to your physical and mental health
