Healthy Body Smart Brain, Long Life

I just came back from an interesting seminar by one of my favorite mentors; Daniel Amen. He is a psychiatrist involved in brain imaging. He has written several books on brain health. The seminar was "Use your brain to change your age" so I was interested in the information for my clients and myself! I am going to give you the highlights of the seminar and what I took away from it. In a nutshell, if you want to life a long life you have to take care of your body and your brain,
So starting with the obvious,the basics of good nutrition are repeated from Daniel Amen to Julia Ross to many leading experts on nutrition who have come to the conclusion that "sugar is not your brain's friend!" It gives you a rush at first, energy, but the let down is quick and comes with anger, brain fog, and weight gain.
Moving right into the weight gain category; the brain can develope "dinosaur syndrome" the more you gain weight, the smaller your brain becomes, shrinking and compressed by fat cells!
Keep away from toxins, chemicals including paints with lead, dying your hair too often, and chemicals that you ingest, drink or snort. Stay away from alcohol, drugs, and inhalants.Your brain can't keep up. You may have been a heavy drinker or pot smoker in your twenties and functioned o.k; but by 40 it is a different story, you will shorten your life span.
Exercise, even if it is just a few minutes of walking, running, lifting weights, swimming. I change my routine and work out water aerobics, zumba, weight lifting and walking four days a week. The fifth day I watch grand kids which is like a 10 mile marathon. I know that I am not telling you anything new, but listen to what is behind the message, your brain will function better, you will live longer.
Amen's last tips were important to me and I hope to you. Do the right things for your brain and your whole life will improve. You will feel better, make better decisions,, have better checkup reports and your skin and you will sleep like a baby.
Work your brain, do something new every day, take a different route when you walk, hang with positive people who are doing the same thing you are (probably the group you meet in the yoga loft, the gym, the dance floor and not the bar room or in my state the casino!

I don't know how long i will live, but while I am on the earth, I want to be in the best shape that I can be in. I know that this is not completely under my control, but I am amazed on how much I can keep my brain and body healthy. I will eat good foods, proteins, veggies and fresh fruit. I notice that i do not miss sugar or alcohol, I feel so much better without them in my system. I will exercise and keep my weight under control so I can move, my joints feel better and I sleep well. I will use my brain and keep it active by writing, making new contacts, learning something new. All happy humans with a happy brain have a goal and connect to other humans. I will have something interesting to say at the end of the day. I will do something kind for someone and I will end the day the way I start with gratitude for this knowledge, for my healthy body and my healthy brain.
