Greetings from Doc Judie
This is getting to be such a common scene in my office; grandma caring about her grandkids. There is such a special bond that exists between grandparents and their grandchildren, but this is a special look at between grandma and her kids.
I don't know if it has to do with the downturn in the economy, both parents working, or if it has always been this way-grandma is pretty important to the grandkids. Anyone who has this arrangement will testify to it!
What happens when the family bonds are broken? I have grandma's bringing in their teenage boys on pot when the parents would not have anything to do with him. I have kids that have stold from the parents, their neighbors, and the most trusted person in their life-grandma.
It is often the grandma who is bringing in the pregnant teenager, the runaway, the depressed young person. It is a beautiful bond to see the woman who may not have had the perfect relationship with her own children, but now has the time, the patience and the wisdom to help her grandchildren. It is an unwritten law that the grandparent must protect their grandchildren to insure that they will grow up and keep the gene pool going. It is a way grandma insures her heritage.
when there is a rift and the bond of trust is broken, there is nothing more beautiful that seeing a grandparent reunite with their children. I usually do not say much but set the stage, address the problem and allow the family to work it out. I just drift into the background and let them do their own healing. I only intervene when they are off track or need to end the session.
My grandmother and grand daughter today just held each other and grandma let her beautiful grand daughter know how beautiful she was to her (this young girl had no self esteem) Grandma was humming the words to the Bruno Mars song :Just The Way You Are"...when I see your face there's not a thing that I would change cause you're amazing just the way you are!" Go to You Tube and hear Bruno Mars sing the song if you don;t know it...think of your grand child and bring plenty of tissue!
So I end with a sign of gratitude for all the beautiful grandmothers who love their grand children, they are saving little lives every day.
Here is to your mental and physical health
Now go hug your grandma!
